Almost midway between Orbetello on the coast and Orvieto in southern Umbria this has been fertile farmland for millennia. Right at its heart Pitigliano seems to grow from its extraordinary crag. Even if you look closely it?s hard to tell where the houses end and the bedrock begins.

The medieval hill town of Pitigliano is situated in a dramatic position 300 metres high above a plain in a natural defensive position that is further enhanced by the presence of fortified walls. The town is within the Grosseto Province in the southern part of Tuscany.

Pitigliano is a small village in Southern Maremma built into tuff. It stands on a ridge at 313 metres above sea level surrounded by green valleys crossed by the Lente and Meleta rivers.

 

Pitigliano makes up part of an area called " borghi del tufo " ? towns carved of tuff stone ? located quite close to the border of Tuscany and Lazio. This position makes Pitigliano an ideal base for discovering the beauty of these two regions in Italy.
